New and Not-So-New Dooney & Bourke Merchandise

Mark your calendars for July 14, as Disney will be releasing two new collections at TrendD in the Downtown Disney Marketplace at Walt Disney World Resort.

Ian Ray, creative director for Dooney & Bourke, and Disney Design Group artist Susan Foy will join Disney for this special event. 

“We are excited to add these new collections to our popular Dooney & Bourke line,” said Laura. “We are releasing a retro print for Walt Disney World Resort and a pattern featuring Disney character charms. The response from guests continues to amaze me, so I’m hopeful people will like these fun, new designs.”

Like the retro print for Disneyland Resort, the artwork for the Walt Disney World Resort pattern was created by Susan Foy. 

 

There will be a variety of styles released for the retro print including a new tassel bag, satchel, cross-body letter carrier, barrel bag, wristlet and, my favorite, the tablet case. Retails will range from $85-$285 depending on style.

The charm pattern, designed by artist Courtney Williams, will be made with a black and a white background. The black background pattern will see a pocket tote, satchel, wristlet and tablet case; while the white background will have a letter carrier, wristlet and barrel bag.

Finally, Laura shared something in development – a nylon version of the classic sketch print. She said that a frequently requested backpack will be released, along with a satchel, letter carrier and pocket satchel. At time of press, Laura was hoping to have the nylon items available for the release party, but she cautioned they may arrive afterward.

TrenD will open at 9:30 a.m. on July 14. The meet and greet opportunity with Ian and Susan will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. I hope to see you there!

 Ear hat designed by Disney Design Group Artist Tim Whalen.

“I used last year’s ear hat as a starting point for the design,” explained Tim. “The 2011 hat was popular with guests, so we made a few tweaks, including updating the font used on the hat. We also added an image of Mickey Mouse wearing a mini-bowler hat similar to the mini hat attached to the ear hat.”

[1 YEAR AGO] Taking Flight With Dumbo Merchandise at Disney Parks

After reading recent articles about Dumbo from Michelle Harker and Tom Smith, I’ve been thinking about that animated classic. This year marks the 70th anniversary of one of Walt Disney’s shortest animated features, which was originally released on October 23, 1941. I think my favorite sequence is from the end of the film when Dumbo is riding on a train through Florida. It’s difficult to believe that the “vacation kingdom of the world” would open in the center of the state about 30 years after the film’s initial release! With these thoughts of Dumbo dancing in my head, I set out looking for Dumbo merchandise. Luckily, I didn’t have to look too long as Tracie Alt, Associate Product Developer for Home and Decorative, played the role of the stork one afternoon.

“These are new baby gift items and I’d like for you to write about them,” Tracie explained to me standing at the door to my office holding three colorful Dumbo-themed items (talk about perfect timing!). I asked why she selected Dumbo.

“I was looking for a way to tie the Disney Parks experience to these baby gifts,” continued Tracie. “Dumbo The Flying Elephant is a popular attraction with many guests. We have introduced baby gift items before but this time I wanted a different take than what is traditionally found in the marketplace. I thought Dumbo was so cute and would be something different than using baby Mickey or Minnie.”

Tracie selected a green and yellow color palette instead the traditional soft pink or soft blue often found on baby items. I love the whimsical circus theme as it just seems perfect for a baby (changing diapers can be like a circus act at times, or maybe that was just how I felt).

Also perfect for a baby is the Dumbo plush pictured at the top of this article. He is part of a line of plush characters wrapped in blankets that have been offered for a few years. Don’t you wish you could just hold him right now? It must be those expressive blue eyes that were first drawn by the late Disney Legend and animator Bill Peet.

I also found some non-baby related items including the recently released Vinylmation – Animation #1 Series. The photo above features four figures from the series – one is the mystery chaser while the others are super chasers (or variants – though we like the term “super chaser”). While not necessarily Dumbo, they are elephants from my other favorite scene in the film.

Well, I think I found all there is to see. The only thing missing was seeing an actual flying elephant. If I had seen that then I would have seen everything. Have you ever seen one?

2012 Disney's Princess Half Marathon Merchandise

This is the the merchandise created by Disney for the upcoming Disney’s Princess Half Marathon weekend being held Feb. 24-26 at Walt Disney World Resort.

The “I Did It!” shirt contains a map of the course on the back.

“The logo with the running shoe on the pillow has been used on collateral and (marathon's) signage for a few years,” explained John Smith, product developer for Sports Merchandise. “We liked the logo so much that we gave it some new colors and added it to merchandise.”

 This tiara has an on/off switch and the blue jewels will light up when activated.
